ease; or why I'm not wearing ridiculous things today

occasionally I do interrupt the ridiculous, costume-y, fantasy nonsensical clothing choices (you wear t-shirts & jeans every day for three months & you'll go a bit crazy, too...at least what passes for clothes crazy in my neck of the woods) and attempt to return to a more classic, basic look. Just the other day, my favorite girl-about-town and sartorial inspiration the glamourai posted about grace. She was in Milan for Fashion Week and had a guest gig at Italian magazine Grazia writing about grace and what it means to her.

In Ms. Framel's post on her own site, she writes, "Grace is a virtue that’s far-too-infrequently celebrated these days. It’s not about stature or prominence or even glamour. Grace is elegance. It is deference and authority in equal measure. It is good manners, it is kindness and it is a sense of propriety." It also makes me think of simplicity and ease.

I have occasionally been attempting to do things a little more simply. Things are hectic, life and work are crazy, and we all spend too much time on the the internet or planning for our time on the internet. Sometimes we take a step back in cutting down on our responsibilities, sometimes we add to them with projects that refresh us.

Simplicity and ease are as much about less as they are about comfort and returning to the basics. It's a sweater and a skirt, instead of a sweater, skirt, vest, scarf, tights, boots, buckles, hat, and belt. It's a cocktail with three ingredients, instead of one that requires a blender. It's a one-bowl cake recipe, a roast, pepperoni pizza. It's putting down the smartphone and meeting flesh-and-blood local friends for a drink.

Speaking of drinks, I've recently stumbled upon a delightfully refreshing fall drink. It's simple (one of those three ingredients or less drinks) and works hot or cold. It's probably been around for ages, but I've decided it's my new favorite.

 The Johnny Appleseed
1 part bourbon or whiskey
2 parts apple cider
seltzer or sparkling mineral water to taste

Cold: pour the bourbon and cider over ice, top with seltzer
Hot: heat cider to near boiling, pour in mug over bourbon

So, in a momentary bid for simplicity, I bring you a day without extraneous jewelry, without crazy shoes, and with simple, comfortable basic pieces. Don't worry, though, because tomorrow is a big night out, complete with some Gothic leanings. The local university is putting on a production of Dracula, and friends & I are off to see it. I'm thinking lace, fur, tights, a hat, and possibly sparkly, strappy heels, all in the same outfit.
